Ceramide NP

The skin's natural lipid barrier contains a mix of ceramide types. Combining ceramide NP and ceramide AP mimics this natural ratio for more effective barrier repair than using either alone. Found together in many barrier-repair formulations.

The skin's lipid barrier is composed of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids in a roughly 1:1:1 ratio. Applying ceramide NP with cholesterol better mimics the natural barrier structure, leading to more effective repair of damaged or compromised skin.

Ceramides support and repair the skin barrier, which retinol can compromise during the adjustment period. Using a ceramide-rich moisturizer alongside retinol helps maintain barrier integrity and reduces peeling and sensitivity.

Hyaluronic acid draws moisture into the skin while ceramides seal it in by reinforcing the lipid barrier. This combination provides complete hydration: attraction and retention of water.

Glycerin attracts water as a humectant while ceramide NP seals the barrier as an occlusive lipid. This combination mirrors the skin's natural moisturizing strategy and is a cornerstone of dermatologist-recommended hydration.

Niacinamide has been shown to increase the skin's natural production of ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol. When combined with topically applied ceramide NP, this provides both internal and external barrier support for optimal skin barrier function.
