This is the reverse pairing. Studies show niacinamide reduces the irritation side effects of retinol while both independently address signs of aging. This pairing allows higher retinol tolerance over time.
Combining retinol with salicylic acid can cause over-exfoliation, dryness, and irritation. If using both, apply BHA in the morning and retinol at night, or buffer with a moisturizer between layers.
