Mandelic acid is an AHA that, like other alpha-hydroxy acids, can cause over-exfoliation when combined with retinol. However, mandelic acid is gentler than glycolic acid due to its larger molecular size, so this combination is better tolerated than retinol + glycolic acid. Still best used at different times.
