Sodium lauryl sulfate strips the skin barrier and increases transepidermal water loss, making skin more susceptible to irritation from retinol. Avoid SLS-based cleansers when using retinol treatments.
SLS compromises the skin barrier, making it more vulnerable to the exfoliating effects of salicylic acid. This combination increases the likelihood of dryness, irritation, and sensitivity.
SLS disrupts the lipid barrier and enhances penetration of other irritants. When followed by glycolic acid, the risk of irritation, stinging, and redness is significantly increased.
