Once believed to form nicotinic acid (causing flushing) when combined, this interaction has been shown to be negligible at typical skincare concentrations and pH levels. Safe to use together. Some users may experience temporary flushing, which is harmless.
This is the reverse pairing. L-ascorbic acid needs a low pH (under 3.5) while retinol works best at a higher pH (5.5-6.0). Using them together can compromise the effectiveness of both. Apply vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night.
Benzoyl peroxide is a powerful oxidizing agent that rapidly degrades ascorbic acid (vitamin C), making it completely ineffective. Never layer these ingredients together.
Ascorbic acid's low pH can destabilize copper peptides. Additionally, copper ions can catalyze the oxidation of vitamin C, potentially reducing the efficacy of both. Best used at different times of day.
